Women are essential sources of life yet can be reduced to silence in their unceasing quest for happiness and to protect their loved ones and themselves from adversity. The absence of words buries anxiety, fear and emotions; dance liberates feelings and intimate expression. This piece by Brahim Bouchelaghem gives a voice and body to the silent stories of his mother, of mothers, of his dancers and of the women who shared their personal accounts with him during his choreographic residency. A few years after his first piece Zahrbat, a tribute to his father, Hiya dances to the beat of a mother’s heart. It honours the determination and the instinctive strength of these women who fight with immense courage in their daily lives; these “warriors” of love and life.
