« All life’s spice comes from people intermixing »Serge Aimé Coulibaly As a multicultural town, Roubaix fosters many dance practices – symbolic expressions of different peoples’ roots. This dynamism, this joie de vivre and the stories the dances convey generated the idea of setting up a meeting between these different styles. Which is how the MappeMonde (‘map of the world’) project came about: from the wish to boost this rich diversity and let new creative energies be expressed through a joint adventure. Carolyn Carlson loves Roubaix’s cosmopolitanism and is very attached to the distinctive features of the town she took over in September 2007 as part of the Journées du Patrimoine (French National Heritage Days) with a series of dances in unusual locations. This time, she’s entrusting the choreographer Serge Aimé Coulibaly with the job of guiding these dancers from every kind of background towards a festive event in December 2009 in the rooms of Roubaix’s Hôtel de Ville (town hall). Dance forms such as salsa, hip hop, flamenco, Asian, classical, African and contemporary all bring their own universes, “their life situations, their hopes and their desires.” And Serge Aimé Coulibaly wants to be inspired by the necessities that drive the participants. The individuals, with their talent, their uniqueness and their imagination, will write his choreographic material. According to him, dance has the unique ability to create dialogue beyond words and clichés, and to be based on the magic of shared enthusiasm. “When you meet and express yourselves through dance, you say a lot more than words.” The workshops begin in the spring and Serge-Aimé Coulibaly’s dearest wish is “to be surprised by what’s going to happen.
