Métaphore

Carolyn CarlsonKudsi Erguner Hassan Massoudy

Improvised dance and calligraphy event with original music by Kudsi Erguner

In 2005, the International Istanbul Music Festival and composer Kudsi Erguner asked Carolyn Carlson and Hassan Massoudy to join them for a project combining music, dance and calligraphy.

A spiritual fusion of the arts, Métaphore brings together poetry by Rumi, the inspired sounds of Kudsi Erguner, internationally renowned master of Turkish music, the outstanding calligraphies of Hassan Massoudy and the brilliant dance of Carolyn Carlson. The performers improvise within a predefined framework in pursuit of unique moments. Hassan Massoudy's brush glides along in a continuation of the four dancers' swaying movements. The shadows of the calligraphy intermingle with the dance in progress to create a new kind of poetry. Hands cut through the space with precise, chiselled gestures and form symbols of their own. The rhythms of the music carry the movements along, reflecting their meditative slowness and lively speed.
